Chelsea’s summer window closed in disorder, but the overall picture left the club with plenty to like. The late collapse of a move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara did sour the ending, yet the broader work across the market appears to have steadied the squad after years of imbalance.

For much of the window, Chelsea were focused on correcting the consequences of previous spending. With no European football and tighter loan rules making their old model harder to sustain, the club reduced a bloated group and, according to The Athletic, generated sales worth as much as $700 million (£519 million), a global record.

That clean-up included significant profits on players such as Andrey Santos, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu. It also gave Alonso a more manageable squad and, importantly, greater say in shaping it. Chelsea moved away from their recent obsession with high-potential youngsters and added older, more established options instead.

Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck and Emiliano Martínez arrived as experienced additions, while Maxence Lacroix and Pep Chavarría offered a different balance to the previous recruitment strategy. At the same time, Marco Palestra, Valentín Barco and Morgan Rogers ensured the club did not abandon long-term planning altogether.

The biggest structural issue was in midfield, where Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández had never looked entirely natural together. Chelsea have now turned that situation into a financial win by moving Fernández on for a profit, leaving room to eventually find a more suitable partner for Caicedo.

There is concern among supporters that Fernández was not replaced before the window shut, especially after Santos also departed. Even so, Chelsea have four midfielders on the books in Caicedo, Barco, Henderson and Roméo Lavia, with Reece James and even Malo Gusto able to cover in emergency situations. Alonso has also given academy pair Reggie Watson and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli opportunities in preseason.

The only lingering issues involve Gabriel Slonina and Kendry Páez, whose uncertain futures remain unresolved. All Chelsea’s overseas loan places are full, leaving permanent exits or a spell out of the picture as the only solutions.

It was not perfect, but compared with other clubs’ summer problems, Chelsea can view this window as a clear step forward.
