Manchester United ended the summer window without adding a new left back, leaving that area of the squad unresolved until at least January. It was not the only priority addressed, but it remains the position that carried the most obvious unanswered question at the close of the market.<\/p>\n
The club moved to strengthen midfield, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba arriving as part of the rebuild. In goal, Altay Bay\u0131nd\u0131r was replaced by Karl Darlow as the second-choice option. United also judged that the successful reintegration of Marcus Rashford removed the need to bring in another winger, while a back-up striker to Benjamin \u0160e\u0161ko was considered but never treated as essential. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Rashford can all play as a centre forward if required.<\/p>\n
Left back, however, was treated differently. Reports indicated that United were still assessing options on the afternoon of Deadline Day, only hours before the window closed. That urgency made sense given the lack of direct competition and cover for Luke Shaw. Shaw produced an outstanding 2026\/27 campaign last season, playing all 38 Premier League matches and all but two of United\u2019s games in all competitions, a sharp contrast to the previous two league seasons combined.<\/p>\n
The problem is that the workload is set to rise. United face at least eight more matches in the Champions League, with the possibility of more if domestic cup runs extend.<\/p>\n
Lewis Hall was the preferred long-term target. According to The Athletic, CEO Omar Berrada contacted Newcastle counterpart David Hopkinson in mid-August to enquire and \u201cdirectly address the matter.\u201d Hopkinson made clear that Hall was not for sale and United appear to have accepted that position.<\/p>\n
United also passed on Jorge Salinas, while checks on Alejandro Balde and interest in Ian Maatsen did not lead anywhere. Deadline Day\u2019s most unexpected name was Rayan A\u00eft-Nouri, but United were unwilling to accept the loan terms with an obligation to buy.<\/p>\n
For now, Shaw is the clear starter. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot offer cover on the left, Patrick Dorgu has drifted further forward under Ruben Amorim, and Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Mart\u00ednez and Carlos Baleba remain emergency alternatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
