Chelsea have moved Robert Sánchez on to Como, with the goalkeeper leaving on loan for the 2026-27 season after a difficult run of form.

His exit follows a performance in which he was blamed for both goals Chelsea conceded in a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage. That display prompted the club to move quickly in the market, bringing in Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa for $10.2 million (£7.5 million).

Chelsea had already made it clear they wanted to find a solution for Sánchez, and Como have now taken him for their first-ever Champions League campaign. The Serie A club are managed by former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas and have also added Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea earlier this summer, which gives Sánchez a familiar presence in the squad.

On arrival, Sánchez said: “It’s been a great welcoming,” Sánchez said upon arrival. “I’m very happy to be here. I will do my best to improve this team. I can’t wait to get started.”

Xabi Alonso had said earlier in the summer that he was satisfied with his goalkeeping options, but Sánchez’s showing against Fulham appears to have ended any lingering uncertainty over his future at the club.

The 28-year-old’s problems were not isolated to one match. He made three errors that directly led to goals last season in all competitions, and Chelsea had long been concerned by repeated lapses in concentration. There were moments when he could still produce a remarkable save, but his distribution and command of the penalty area remained major concerns.

In the end, those shortcomings shaped Chelsea’s decision to sanction his departure as they look to move on under Alonso.
