Liverpool’s second straight 2-2 draw under Andoni Iraola left them still waiting for a first win of the new regime, even though Saturday’s point felt deserved. Nottingham Forest, now under Oliver Glasner, proved stubborn throughout, and Liverpool needed a late Víctor Muñoz finish in the 82nd minute to keep the match level.

There were moments when the visitors looked vulnerable, particularly when Alisson produced a superb save from Igor Jesus just before half-time. Even so, Liverpool also spent long stretches looking disjointed and short of rhythm, a reminder that the side is still recovering from a bleak 2025-26 season. Iraola’s substitutions helped shift the balance, and the team’s resilience prevented Forest from leaving Anfield with a third straight win there.

One clear issue remains Liverpool’s midfield protection. Jamie Carragher may continue to call for a holding midfielder, but that is not expected to happen before the summer window closes. Ryan Gravenberch’s issues in transition last weekend had already reopened the discussion, and Iraola responded by selecting Alexis Mac Allister instead. That choice did not solve everything. Mac Allister was overpowered for Forest’s opening goal after Matz Sels launched a direct ball forward, and while the Argentine offered some work in possession and defence, he won only half of his ground duels and one of four aerial duels.

The right side also remains a problem. Jeremie Frimpong was used to provide width there, but that brought mixed results. Liverpool’s attack is naturally left-sided, yet Frimpong did not offer the technical security needed in the final third.

Víctor Muñoz, by contrast, gave Iraola something more encouraging. Raw but energetic, he drifted across the front line and finished with confidence when Florian Wirtz picked him out on the turn. It was a different kind of goal from anything he had shown earlier in the game, and it underlined why he may become an important option. Wirtz himself remains under scrutiny after another subdued outing, with plenty still waiting for him to impose himself as expected.
