Arsenal begin the 2026/27 season with the rare burden of expectation that comes with being champions. Mikel Arteta now has the task of keeping the Premier League title at the Emirates, a feat achieved by only a handful of managers since the competition began. History is not generous to title holders, and the Gunners know the target on their back will be immediate.

Last season’s success ended a long wait stretching back to 2004, but the defence will require more than momentum. Only Manchester City have managed to retain the title since Manchester United completed their third consecutive triumph in 2008/09, and even recent champions have stumbled badly while trying to repeat the feat. Arsenal’s own objective is clear, yet their ambitions extend beyond domestic matters.

A first Champions League crown would sit above everything else for many supporters, especially after last season’s penalty defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Their European development has been steady since returning to the competition in 2023, and they are again being viewed as contenders. Even so, PSG remain a threat, with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid also expected to re-enter the picture.

The domestic cups may matter less after the end of a six-year trophy drought, but Arsenal will still see opportunity there after repeated near-misses since winning the FA Cup in 2020. Arteta has depth across the squad, and the season’s early schedule has been kind. Arsenal meet just one Big Six rival, Chelsea at home, in their first eight league games, and only one more, Tottenham away, in their final nine.

Bruno Guimarães is the major arrival, joining for £75 million from Newcastle United to strengthen midfield alongside Declan Rice. Piero Hincapié joins permanently after last season on loan, Christos Tzolis comes in from Club Brugge, and Illan Meslier arrives on a free.

Max Dowman remains a notable young option after flashes of promise last season, while Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri also offer support. Louis Copley, however, tore his ACL in preseason and is expected to miss the full campaign.

Arsenal look well placed to compete at the top again, but their title defence may depend on whether the attack improves before the window closes and whether Bukayo Saka stays fit. They are strong, structured and ambitious, yet the next step may require one more layer of evolution.
