Chelsea could be heading towards another significant change in ownership after fresh reports suggested both Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are open to selling their stakes.<\/p>\n
The U.S. investigation into Walter initially looked like the main factor behind any movement at Stamford Bridge, but the Financial Times has reported that Boehly is also prepared to move on and sell his 12.8% share. That would mark a notable turn for the man who helped front the takeover of Chelsea four years ago.<\/p>\n
Boehly and Walter, who are also business partners away from football, are understood to be in talks with majority shareholders Clearlake Capital about exiting their positions in the club. The pair have been part of the BlueCo group during a period that has been turbulent both on and off the pitch.<\/p>\n
Walter\u2019s possible departure appears tied to the investigation into his dealings, while Boehly\u2019s willingness to leave has come as a surprise. He led the purchase of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich and brought in Clearlake Capital to help meet the asking price. Despite not holding a majority stake, he has frequently carried much of the criticism directed at the ownership group.<\/p>\n
Boehly currently serves as chairman, though he is due to step down in 2027 under an existing arrangement with Clearlake Capital. That agreement is understood to see the chairmanship alternate between the two sides every five years.<\/p>\n
There have long been reports of internal tensions between Chelsea and Clearlake chiefs Behdad Eghbali and Jos\u00e9 E. Feliciano, though the club have rejected those claims. Differences over the team\u2019s direction, managerial choices and the future of Stamford Bridge have all been linked to those reports.<\/p>\n
If both Boehly and Walter sell to Clearlake, Hansj\u00f6rg Wyss would be left as the only other co-owner. Wyss holds the same 12.8% share and turns 91 in January.<\/p>\n
Clearlake already controls 61.54% of the club, so any further share acquisition would not be expected to alter Chelsea\u2019s day-to-day running in a major way.
