Arsenal are close to finalising a move for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimar\u00e3es, with the Brazil midfielder expected to become the second most expensive signing in the club\u2019s history if the reported deal is completed.<\/p>\n
Multiple reports say Newcastle are prepared to approve his departure for a fee of $101 million (\u00a375 million), after the two clubs reportedly found a \u201ccompromise.\u201d At 28, Guimar\u00e3es would leave St James\u2019 Park after a summer in which Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon also departed at significant expense, a run of exits that reportedly led Eddie Howe to tender his resignation as manager.<\/p>\n
For Arsenal, the scale of the move would underline how sharply their spending has risen under Mikel Arteta. A club that once sought a manager \u201cwho will not spend big money on transfers.\u201d has long since embraced a different approach.<\/p>\n
If the transfer goes through at the quoted figure, Guimar\u00e3es would sit behind only Declan Rice in Arsenal\u2019s list of record buys. Most of the club\u2019s biggest fees have been committed during Arteta\u2019s time in charge, and four of the 10 most expensive arrivals in Arsenal history came in last summer alone, when Mart\u00edn Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gy\u00f6keres and Noni Madueke arrived for a combined total of more than $300 million.<\/p>\n
The proposed move would also place Guimar\u00e3es above Nicolas P\u00e9p\u00e9, whose $92 million transfer from Lille in 2019 remains one of the most costly and one that ultimately ended Unai Emery\u2019s spell.<\/p>\n
The fee, though substantial, is still below the temporary $135 million release clause inserted into Guimar\u00e3es\u2019s new five-year contract in October 2023. Newcastle had bought him from Lyon for around $58 million in 2022, but Arsenal appear to have struck a lower figure than that clause.<\/p>\n
When viewed against this summer\u2019s market, the move would not even top the scale of other major deals. It would be the fifth most expensive transfer in that wider group, behind the reported sums involved in moves for Mateus Fernandes, Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers.<\/p>\n
