Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge after a match in which clear chances were scarce and a VAR intervention proved decisive. The FA Cup champions created the better of the opportunities from start to finish, but could not find a way through a resilient Palace side.<\/p>\n
Crystal Palace threatened early. Eberechi Eze tested Robert S\u00e1nchez with a long-range attempt and then struck a free kick past S\u00e1nchez only for the goal to be ruled out after referee Darren England consulted the VAR monitor. Marc Gu\u00e9hi, in attempting to move Mois\u00e9s Caicedo out of the path of the shot, was judged to have encroached within a metre of the Chelsea wall and the goal was disallowed.<\/p>\n
Chelsea\u2019s openings were largely speculative. Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Marc Cucurella all sent long-range efforts well wide. Trevoh Chalobah produced the clearest genuine chance for the hosts when he lifted a shot over the crossbar after a fortunate bounce from a set piece.<\/p>\n
Palace continued to pose problems. Jean-Philippe Mateta was played in by an excellent Adam Wharton pass but drilled his shot straight at S\u00e1nchez, and Eze later stung the goalkeeper\u2019s palms with a vicious strike from the edge of the area. Eze departed to a standing ovation from the visiting support.<\/p>\n
Est\u00eav\u00e3o provided energy after coming on, taking the ball past Gu\u00e9hi and delivering a cross that deceived Dean Henderson and found Pedro Neto, whose header failed to trouble the scoreline. The 18-year-old later drew a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Daniel Mu\u00f1oz.<\/p>\n
Injury-enforced changes affected Chelsea\u2019s defence. Josh Acheampong started in place of Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo and performed adequately, but the loss of Colwill was felt as Palace continued to create promising moments.<\/p>\n
The match finished 0-0. Late efforts from Andrey Santos, Liam Delap and a looping Santos header could not alter the outcome. There is still work to do for a Chelsea side with ambitions higher up the table.<\/p>\n
