Chelsea have been fined \u00a310 million and given a suspended transfer ban after the Football Association concluded its investigation into illegal agent and third-party payments linked to the previous ownership.<\/p>\n
The verdict closes a long-running case that had already seen UEFA punish the club with a \u20ac10 million fine in July 2023 after its own inquiry. The FA has now found Chelsea guilty of 74 rule breaches, while an initial six-point deduction was rejected on appeal.<\/p>\n
The matter came to light through paperwork uncovered during BlueCo\u2019s purchase of the club from Roman Abramovich. Those documents showed that, between 2011 and 2018, \u00a347.5 million was paid to 12 individuals or corporate entities in connection with several high-profile transfers.<\/p>\n
Deals involving Eden Hazard, Kenedy, Ramires, David Luiz, Andre Sch\u00fcrrle, Nemanja Mati\u0107, Willian, Samuel Eto\u2019o and at least one further player were all linked to illegal payments used to help facilitate the transfers. None of the players themselves are suspected of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
Once the issue was uncovered, Chelsea\u2019s current owners immediately reported it to the relevant authorities. That led to investigations by the FA, the Premier League and UEFA.<\/p>\n
The sanction is notably lighter than many rival supporters had expected, with Chelsea avoiding a points deduction and instead receiving a suspended two-window registration ban that runs until the summer of 2027. The club will only be prevented from signing players if any further rule breaches are committed.<\/p>\n
There is also recognition that Chelsea had set aside more money in advance to cover potential sanctions, while their self-reporting and cooperation worked in their favour throughout the process.
