Chelsea\u2019s first public friendly of the Xabi Alonso era produced a frantic 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday, but the scoreline told only part of the story. It was a match that moved from youthful uncertainty to second-half authority, with the Blues trailing 3-2 before their established names arrived and changed the game.<\/p>\n
Alonso kept faith with a four-back structure in Sydney, continuing the 4-2-3-1 shape already used in closed-door meetings with Bromley and Crawley Town. Even without the ball, Chelsea pressed into a 4-4-2. That does not lock the manager into one system for the season, especially with more senior players still to return, but it is now three games from three in which 4-2-3-1 has been the clear starting point.<\/p>\n
The opening hour was heavily weighted towards youth. Liam Delap, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong and D\u00e1rio Essugo were the only first-team players in the starting XI, with academy prospects filling the rest of the side. The inexperience was obvious, and Western Sydney made the most of it by creating problems for both versions of Chelsea\u2019s defence.<\/p>\n
Once the substitutions came, the balance shifted. Cole Palmer, Est\u00eav\u00e3o, Jo\u00e3o Pedro, Levi Colwill and Marco Palestra all entered with Chelsea behind, and the team quickly looked more capable of imposing itself. The late stages became the \u2018Pedro Show\u2019 as Chelsea\u2019s main striker set up one goal and scored three more to settle the contest.<\/p>\n
There was also a clear lesson in the striker pecking order. Delap had a chance to make his case while Pedro was on the bench, with Emmanuel Emegha injured and Nicolas Jackson not yet with the group after the World Cup. Instead, Delap\u2019s hour brought loose passing and visible frustration, while 17-year-old Satpayev stood out with an early opener that showed a sharper edge.<\/p>\n
Satpayev is expected to go on loan, but the broader picture is clear enough. One senior striker will likely leave, and perhaps two if Chelsea secure their preferred move for Brighton & Hove Albion\u2019s Danny Welbeck. Pedro\u2019s position is not in doubt, leaving Delap, Jackson and Emegha to compete for limited space. This performance did Delap no favours.<\/p>\n
