Former Liverpool manager J\u00fcrgen Klopp has publicly described the lengths the club went to in 2017 when attempting to sign Kylian Mbapp\u00e9.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe most expensive non-transfer we [Liverpool] invested in,\u201d Klopp recalled. \u201cWe flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbapp\u00e9 family boarded a private jet with five rooms or something. We really went all out.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen we flew around in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food … we couldn\u2019t be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris!\u201d<\/p>\n
Klopp\u2019s account underlined a clear advantage Liverpool believed it had: Mbapp\u00e9\u2019s mother and primary advisor, Fayza Lamari, is a known Liverpool fan. That connection was referenced by Mbapp\u00e9 himself when he reflected on the contact between the parties.<\/p>\n
\u201cI talked to Liverpool because it\u2019s the favorite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool,\u201d Mbapp\u00e9 recalled in 2022. \u201cI don\u2019t know why, you will have to ask her.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It\u2019s a big club. Of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ultimately Paris Saint-Germain secured Mbapp\u00e9, parting with a reported \u20ac180 million (around $204 million at the time) after an initial loan arrangement. Liverpool, left without Mbapp\u00e9, moved in different directions in the transfer market. Klopp had wanted Julian Brandt but the club instead completed a signing for Mohamed Salah from Roma.<\/p>\n
