Tottenham Hotspur\u2019s aggressive activity at the start of the summer window has had consequences beyond north London. After signing Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin D\u00fabravka as free agents and spending \u00a352 million on Brighton & Hove Albion\u2019s Jan Paul van Hecke, Spurs then committed heavy funds in midfield. The club paid a combined \u00a3185 million to acquire Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, with nearly all that money guaranteed. The \u00a3100 million deal for Tonali makes further movement in Newcastle United\u2019s midfield far less likely.<\/p>\n
Arsenal had been linked with Tonali but were not prepared to match the necessary outlay, so attention shifted to Bruno Guimar\u00e3es. The Gunners saw a \u00a355 million bid rejected by Newcastle. The Brazilian, bright at the World Cup, has been told by the club and those close to him that they do not intend to sell.<\/p>\n
On YouTube, Fabrizio Romano assessed the situation: \u201cAlways been a player appreciated by [Mikel] Arteta, but now with Newcastle, it\u2019s not going to be an easy one at all because Newcastle again made money with [Anthony] Gordon, made money with [Sandro] Tonali, and they already told Bruno Guimar\u00e3es and they told people close to him that they want to keep the player.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, it\u2019s not going to be easy at all for Arsenal to get it done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Romano says Guimar\u00e3es is the Gunners\u2019 \u201ctop target in midfield\u201d and suggests they could make another bid, but from Newcastle\u2019s perspective the door is shut for now. Had Spurs not paid the sum to sign Tonali, Newcastle might have been more willing to consider offers for the 28-year-old Guimar\u00e3es.<\/p>\n
Arsenal remain expected to prioritise attacking reinforcements too, with Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola among names linked, yet there is also room for midfield additions. Christian N\u00f8rgaard is set to move on after one season, and the workload placed on Mart\u00edn Zubimendi and Declan Rice exposed the need for further rotation.
