Arne Slot has acknowledged that Liverpool enter the 2025\u201326 season as favourites to retain the Premier League title, but he insisted that tag reflects last season’s achievement as much as recent transfer activity. Slot said the club earned that status before what has been described as record-breaking transfer spend and emphasised that previous seasons of relatively low net spending complicate any suggestion the position rests on money alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“That we are favourites because we won it last season and we played so well, that\u2019s clear,” Slot told the media.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The manager accepted the new signings strengthen the squad while warning that perceptions based solely on outlay would be misleading. He pointed to the club’s net spend over the last two seasons and the departures that followed the title-winning campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For me, it would not be normal if it\u2019s about spending, because the net spend of us compared to the other teams is not in our favour, if you look at the last two seasons. So if we are only favourites because we\u2019ve spent a bit, I would see that as weird, because we\u2019ve lost a lot as well.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slot also stressed it is too early to conclude whether the current group is stronger than the one that won the title. With the transfer window still open, he said final judgement must wait until after it closes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“That is something I can only tell you on September 1, because the window is still open for three weeks,” he continued. “I do feel that the players we\u2019ve brought in have already done really well, as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“But I cannot tell you now if these players are able to perform at the same level every three days. Therefore, we first have to start the season [to see].<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“And I did know that Luis D\u00edaz was able to do that, and all the other ones were able to do that. So that is another challenge at the Premier League, because we play so many games. And for Milos Kerkez, it\u2019s going to be his first time, probably, that at this level he might have to play every three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Florian Wirtz comes from the Bundesliga, where he was used to playing every three or four days, but we have to ask him in two months if the intensity levels of the Premier League are comparable with the Bundesliga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“So in terms of talent and the quality we\u2019ve brought in, we see that we have a very good team again. But we have to wait and see, will they stay fit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There are multiple factors you need to take into account. I am really happy with the players we\u2019ve brought in. But we\u2019ve also lost starters that have had a big impact on our title-winning season last year.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
