Multiple members of the Glazer family are weighing whether to sell part or all of their controlling stake in Manchester United, according to a report. The discussions come amid a complex backdrop of sporting frustration, fresh investment and significant financial decisions.<\/p>\n
United have not been involved in a Premier League title race over the past 13 years, and the club\u2019s struggles were highlighted on the same day Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford for a second time in November 2022, when the Glazers released a rare statement saying they would be open to \u201cnew investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than a year later Sir Jim Ratcliffe was confirmed as a new minority stakeholder with control of sporting operations under INEOS. Success on the pitch has been mixed: the club recorded its worst-ever Premier League finish in 2024\u201325 and made 450 non-playing staff redundant, but the latest campaign saw an improvement under Michael Carrick that ended with a third-place finish, the club\u2019s highest in three years, and Carrick was appointed permanent manager.<\/p>\n
Bloomberg reported that some family members were \u201cdebating\u201d offloading shares, while others remain in dialogue internally. Avram and Joel Glazer remain the most visible co-chairs, but four other siblings \u2014 Darcie, Bryan, Kevin and Edward \u2014 also hold shares and votes. Together the family controls 67.9% of voting rights, per Manchester United. Ratcliffe\u2019s INEOS holds 28.9% of voting rights.<\/p>\n
The deliberations coincide with a proposed move to a new 100,000-capacity stadium that has been publicly driven by Ratcliffe. On the public markets the club\u2019s shares trade around $21 on the New York Stock Exchange, a level that translates to a market valuation of about $3.6 billion. The Glazers previously rejected a full-sale offer in 2023 thought to exceed $6.7 billion. Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7% stake in February 2024 for $1.6 billion.<\/p>\n
