Xabi Alonso\u2019s arrival at Chelsea has prompted a reassessment of the squad, and the goalkeeping position is firmly under scrutiny as the club searches for an upgrade on Robert Sanchez. Five candidates emerge from the draft of options being monitored across Europe.<\/p>\n
Mile Svilar remains high on Chelsea\u2019s list. Earmarked for superstardom during his teenage years at Anderlecht, Svilar has fulfilled much of that potential at Roma and is now 26. According to Corriere dello Sport, Chelsea have proposed a deal worth around $58 million (\u20ac50 million, \u00a343 million) for the Roma stopper. Roma, who have handed him back-to-back Goalkeeper of the Season awards, are desperate to keep him and are attempting to rebuff approaches. Roma are believed to be facing financial pressure to sell before the end of June, so Chelsea may revisit the proposal later this month if funds have not arrived from elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Mike Maignan is another known target. Chelsea reportedly missed an opportunity to sign the AC Milan goalkeeper last summer after talks collapsed over a $5.8 million (\u20ac5 million, \u00a34.3 million) valuation gap. Maignan signed a new contract in January but has been linked with an exit after Milan failed to match his ambition and qualify for the Champions League. Convincing him to join after a difficult season for Chelsea will be a challenge, but the club is expected to try to reignite interest.<\/p>\n
James Trafford represents a homegrown-style option with Manchester City academy credentials. The 23-year-old is praised as an excellent shot-stopper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He trained alongside Liam Delap, Rom\u00e9o Lavia, Cole Palmer and Jamie Gittens, and some City fans compared him favourably to Gianluigi Donnarumma this past season. City will not keep him as a backup, and several Premier League clubs see him as a potential bargain.<\/p>\n
Marco Carnesecchi has progressed through loans and is now 25 and established in Serie A. An active sweeper confident with his feet and hands, he is another Atalanta product that clubs are starting to notice. Atalanta are often willing sellers and may consider a cut-price deal for a player entering the final two years of his contract.<\/p>\n
Finally, the transfer of Robin Risser offers a cautionary example for ownership.
