It was the first trophy since the relegation at the end of the 1973-74 campaign, still described in the record as the club\u2019s worst season in almost a century. United secured immediate promotion back to the First Division, then finished third in the top flight the following year and reached the FA Cup final, only to lose to Second Division Southampton in one of the great Wembley shocks.<\/p>\n
Tommy Docherty\u2019s side entered the 1977 final as underdogs. Liverpool, the English champions that season, later went on to win their maiden European Cup in Rome against Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach. United\u2019s FA Cup victory came through goals from Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff, either side of a Liverpool equaliser in a frantic start to the second half. That win denied Liverpool a treble and a treble of league, FA Cup and European Cup was not achieved by an English club until 1998-99, when it was completed by Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.<\/p>\n
The kit launch also marks a first for the club in practical terms. While it is common for Premier League clubs to introduce next season\u2019s shirt late in the campaign and immediately wear it, Manchester United had never done so until now. The Red Devils already gave the 2025-26 home uniform its final outing in the recent 3-2 win over Liverpool that secured a return to the Champions League.
