Chelsea confirmed the dismissal of Liam Rosenior on Wednesday, bringing to an abrupt end a spell that began at the start of January when he replaced Enzo Maresca after his sudden exit. Rosenior lasted 106 days of a contract that ran for 2,001 days.<\/p>\n
The manager acknowledged recent unrest within the playing group before his departure, saying: \u201cIt looks that way, I won\u2019t lie.\u201d Calum McFarlane will take charge as interim manager for the remainder of the campaign.<\/p>\n
On the field, Chelsea sit eighth in the Premier League with 48 points, having been leapfrogged by Bournemouth into seventh on Wednesday night. They are seven points behind Liverpool, who occupy fifth and the final Champions League qualifying position. With four matches remaining, any realistic path to the top five is narrow.<\/p>\n
The only mathematical routes cited are finishing sixth while Aston Villa finish fifth and win the Europa League, which would unlock an extra Champions League berth, or hoping that Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool all falter while Chelsea win every remaining game.<\/p>\n
Failure to reach the Champions League would mark the third time in four seasons that Chelsea have missed out on Europe\u2019s elite competition and would extend a difficult period for the club. Per transfermarkt, Chelsea now rank as the most valuable club to miss the Champions League, topping their 2022\u201323 valuation. That campaign saw the club valued at \u20ac1 billion ($1.4 billion); they are now valued at \u20ac1.2 billion ($1.6 billion).<\/p>\n
Champions League exclusion would also threaten Chelsea\u2019s presence in any European competition next season, potentially dropping them below Europa Conference League qualification. That level of absence has occurred only twice since the club rose to prominence in the late 1990s: in 2016\u201317 and in 2023\u201324, each following poor league finishes of 10th and 12th respectively.<\/p>\n
Rosenior, 41, had signed a six-and-a-half-year deal until June 2032 only months earlier and could be due a substantial payout. The club has recently paid roughly \u00a313 million to Graham Potter and \u00a315 million to Thomas Tuchel on dismissal; reports suggest Rosenior\u2019s settlement could be upwards of \u00a324 million based on a reported annual salary of \u00a34 million.
