Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior refused to categorically dismiss reports suggesting Alejandro Garnacho could be sold, instead saying his responsibility is to get the winger performing. Garnacho spent most of his 74 minutes on the pitch switching flanks with Pedro Neto in the hope of finding a United fullback who would not shut him down. Those efforts proved fruitless.<\/p>\n
The outing summed up an underwhelming season for the 21-year-old. Garnacho boasts more Premier League bookings (two) than goals (one) this season and has attracted reports questioning his attitude off the pitch. talkSPORT reported that Chelsea are willing to sell Garnacho less than a year after spending in the region of $54 million (\u00a340 million) to extricate him from Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
When asked about that claim Rosenior said, \u201cI\u2019d like to know the source of the report. These reports can come from anywhere,\u201d and declined a blunt denial. That measured response contrasted with his stance when questioned over a possible exit for Cole Palmer. On Garnacho he added, \u201cGarna is 21 years old,\u201d and \u201cGarna is someone who has special qualities when he is in a good place and he\u2019s in good form. And my job is to help him reach those levels.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Chelsea boss\u2019s task is complicated by a damning assessment from Garnacho\u2019s former Manchester United academy manager, Nicky Butt. Butt labelled Garnacho\u2019s attitude during his time at Manchester United \u201ca disgrace,\u201d and said the forward was promoted to \u201csuperstar status way too quick,\u201d both on merit and in terms of his mental fortitude.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe signed at 16,\u201d Butt recalled on his podcast with Paul Scholes, The Good, The Bad & The Football. \u201cGarnacho was always a bit stand-off-ish, he had a high opinion of himself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought he had an edge about him. And when he got into the first team\u2014I will just say what I think because I was there\u2014he got above his station way too quick. He got superstar status way too quick.\u201d<\/p>\n
Garnacho made his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old, incidentally against Chelsea, at the end of the 2021\u201322 campaign before a breakout year under Erik ten Hag.
