Just weeks after Mohamed Salah confirmed he would leave Liverpool this summer, Andy Robertson has also decided to depart the club after nine years. While Salah\u2019s future remained uncertain until his announcement, Robertson\u2019s exit had become increasingly likely over several months.<\/p>\n
In January the transfer window brought an approach from Tottenham Hotspur, who sought Robertson\u2019s experience to aid their battle against relegation. Liverpool and Spurs held late talks, but discussions collapsed after Liverpool were unable to identify a replacement. Crucially, Robertson was open to the move. His desire to leave was not driven by off-field issues but by the loss of his starting place.<\/p>\n
A key figure throughout the J\u00fcrgen Klopp era at Anfield, Robertson was demoted following the summer signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. Robertson made 20 Premier League appearances this season but was given just seven starts. Kerkez is being viewed as Liverpool\u2019s left back of the future, which left little room for the club stalwart.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not like I\u2019ve knocked back a contract or anything, there was no contract on the table,\u201d Robertson confessed. \u201cIt was a conversation we all had. A number of clubs have been linked with Robertson, including Celtic and Atl\u00e9tico Madrid, who came close to signing him last summer after Kerkez\u2019s arrival. Reports now indicate Spurs are favourites to secure Robertson this summer, having persuaded him over a potential move in January.<\/p>\n
A verbal agreement is reported between Spurs and Robertson, but any permanent deal is conditional on Spurs avoiding relegation from the Premier League. With six games remaining, Roberto De Zerbi\u2019s side have fallen into the relegation zone.
