Michael Carrick says he still has no clear picture of his long-term role at Manchester United as the club approach the final seven games of the season.<\/p>\n
A small group of players have publicly backed Carrick for the job, but the former midfielder says he is not pressing for an early decision. He reiterated his focus is on the immediate task and on planning for the future of the squad.<\/p>\n
\u201cI understand the situation, and where we were at when we came back in January, the plan for the rest of the season and the possibilities in the summer,\u201d he told Sky Sports . \u201cI don’t think that\u2019s changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThings will get sorted when they get sorted. For me it\u2019s just about doing the best job that we can and plan for the future and the good of the club and the players in the squad. I am not coming to get through to the end of the season and deal with what\u2019s next.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s important we make a plan and follow that through for the squad to get stronger. If I am part of it then I am part of it. If not, then that is the situation I walked into.\u201d<\/p>\n
The appointment call that brought Carrick back came three months ago amid a period of recent struggles for the club. Carrick said he wants to concentrate on correcting those issues and on improving the team rather than the uncertainty surrounding his own future.<\/p>\n
As a player he won five Premier League titles with United, and he confirmed his ambition to restore the team to those levels. Doing so would, according to the context he described, make him the first English manager to win the Premier League and the first since Howard Wilkinson in 1992 to win the top-flight title.<\/p>\n
