Reports say Andy Robertson has reached a verbal agreement to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer once his Liverpool contract expires. The Athletic were first to reveal Spurs are in \u201cpole position\u201d to sign Robertson, and Fabrizio Romano has since reported there is a verbal understanding in place to bring the Scotland international to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.<\/p>\n
The move is not guaranteed. Robertson is understood to be waiting on the outcome of Spurs’ battle against relegation before putting pen to paper. If Roberto De Zerbi\u2019s side survive, a deal will be agreed. West Ham United\u2019s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers dropped Spurs into the relegation zone, though the club can climb out with victory over Sunderland on Sunday.<\/p>\n
On the face of it left back does not look like a pressing problem for Tottenham. Destiny Udogie remains part of the squad, Djed Spence offers a capable option despite being naturally right-sided, and young Souza was recruited from Santos in January to help plan for the future. That depth, and Udogie\u2019s status, mean it would surprise many to see Tottenham place their faith in Robertson ahead of Udogie.<\/p>\n
The complication is Udogie\u2019s recent injury record. He has missed 19 games across all competitions this season, leaving Spurs with a headache at left back and opening the door for experienced cover.<\/p>\n
Robertson would bring a proven quality as a high-level deputy, having performed a similar role at Liverpool this season behind the struggling Milos Kerkez. There is also the possibility of Robertson fitting alongside Udogie.
