Paul Scholes has called on Manchester United to move on from as many as eight players this summer, identifying a mixture of established figures and emerging names as possible departures. He singled out Leny Yoro as a surprising candidate among those he believes should leave.<\/p>\n
Defence was the most prominent area of concern. Scholes backed Matthijs de Ligt to start but said doubts remain over Harry Maguire despite the centre back having recently signed a new contract. \u201cLook, I think he\u2019s been really good and he’s brought himself back from the dead,\u201d Scholes conceded. \u201cI think he\u2019s been sensational, what he\u2019s done. I\u2019m so, so pleased for him, but I\u2019m thinking about a United team you want to win the league and the Champions League, and that\u2019s where United should be aiming.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not sure you\u2019d do that with Maguire, unless you\u2019ve got someone like a Rio [Ferdinand] next to him, then possibly, yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the flanks, Scholes suggested a clearout among fullbacks. Diogo Dalot avoided criticism in the conversation, but Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui were earmarked for exit. \u201cThey brought him in as a wingback and he\u2019s not really played there,\u201d Scholes said of Dorgu. \u201cI\u2019d probably sell. I\u2019m not sure what position he is. Again, if you keep him, then he\u2019s just a squad player.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Mazraoui, Scholes added: \u201cSell. I don\u2019t know where he fits in. He\u2019s been like a right-sided center half and they don\u2019t play with three center halves any more. If there are three center halves, then you\u2019d probably have him as one of five or six, but I think it\u2019s probably time to let him go now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Luke Shaw won praise and a tough conclusion. \u201cWhen he was playing consistently, I don\u2019t think there is a better left back in the world , not just Europe,\u201d Scholes said. \u201cBut if you\u2019re asking me now\u2014and he\u2019s done alright appearance-wise this year\u2014I\u2019d sell him. He doesn\u2019t play enough games.\u201d<\/p>\n
Midfield was described as a priority following Casemiro\u2019s exit on a free transfer. \u201cAnother one who\u2019s turned his fortunes, but they need strengthening in that position,\u201d Scholes said of the Brazilian. He added of Manuel Ugarte: \u201cI think he\u2019ll go.\u201d On Mason Mount he said: \u201cI\u2019d probably sell him\u2014and I like him, he\u2019s a great footballer,\u201d and \u201cBut he\u2019s never going to play in front of Bruno Fernandes. I\u2019m not sure what other position he could play and he doesn\u2019t play enough games.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scholes also suggested unsettled striker Joshua Zirkzee could leave after limited minutes and reported interest from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
