David Beckham has publicly praised Michael Carrick for the positive effect he has had at Manchester United, offering a contrasting view to several former team-mates and pundits who remain critical.<\/p>\n
Beckham told talkSPORT . “I must admit the last few months have been a lot more comfortable than the last ten years, to be honest. It\u2019s been tough over that time,” he said. “But I think Michael\u2019s got experience. I think he\u2019s got a calmness about him that he\u2019s brought into the club.<\/p>\n
“He knows the club. He knows the players. He knows the way Man Utd play and the way Man Utd should play.”<\/p>\n
Beckham added: “I think that the way he\u2019s got the team and brought the team together has been incredible. I think as a United fan, it\u2019s exactly what we needed.”<\/p>\n
Those comments sit alongside public criticism from other former players. Paul Scholes posted an Instagram story that he later removed and for which he apologized. Scholes had written: “Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos Utd have been crap last 4 games,” shortly after United\u2019s defeat to 10-man Newcastle earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Roy Keane has also been openly critical, making clear he would not appoint Carrick as permanent manager this summer despite the recent upturn in performances and results. United have since recorded a victory over Aston Villa and a draw with Bournemouth as they sought to steady their Champions League qualification bid.<\/p>\n
The debate over Carrick\u2019s long-term suitability continues to divide opinion inside the game and among former players. Beckham\u2019s assessment stresses experience and calm, while Scholes and Keane have set a higher bar before offering full endorsement.
